Rocky Mountain National Park - October Part 1

I was lucky enough to visit RMNP park for the fourth time this year.  I hope to get at least two more visits in before the new year.  We just celebrated our 11th year of marriage.  We sent the kids off to stay with a friend so we could head off for a weekend on fun and relaxation.  We have done this for several of our anniversaries.  RMNP is one of our favorite places to visit.

The weather was mostly nice.  The sun was out and it was in the 50's but Saturday the wind was blowing pretty hard.  There was a gust that blew so hard that it jerked the car door out of my grasp, bent it backwards and broke the hinges on the door.  I was really happy about this since we have had the car less that one year.  Luckily I was able to close the door back so we could continue on with our weekend.  I will have to see what insurance says about this.

We did not have a lot of luck seeing elk on Saturday.  One here one there nothing much.  So we figured the rut was over and they were all resting up for the long cold winter that was on the way.  Well we were wrong.  Sunday, on our last pass through the park, we ran across three herds of elk.  They were in full rut with the bulls keeping their herds close by budling and running off other bulls that came to close.  I would bet this is the last of the rutting and does not last much longer.

I got a new lens, Canon 100-400mm, and this was the first time I got to use it.  I really liked it and gave it a good work out taking a couple hundred pictures this weekend.  Both of these pictures were taking with my new lens.

Bull running his herd

I was able to get close enough to get this bull in full frame.

Good job, it must be nice living that close to RMNP. I have never shot the Elk when they were in the November short rut, I always figured by then the weather would change enough that I should be home.

Tommy: Happy Anniversary to you and the hubby. It is wonderful that you share the love of the outdoors. I really enjoy your wildlife captures.

My friend Willard from PA does a lot of Elk shooting. you might enjoy his site. I have it on my side bar.

Great pictures as always, didn't take you long to get the hang of your new lens! I especially like the second picture, what a wonderful portrait.

I love that close-up. It looks like your bull has been wallowing as he has mud on his antlers.

Congratulations on you new lens. I have been shooting one for a year now and have been very well pleased. Its biggest drawback for wildlife shooting is the limitation of the F5.6 apreture

Good shots and I hope you like the new lens.

I think it is one of the most versatile lenses out there. I often have mine mounted on the 40-D when I am driving to and from my favorite spots. If one spots wildlife by the roadside, it is easy to get into action, while trying to alight from the vehicle and mounting the 500mmF4 on a tripod will usually spook the animal.
