Osprey & Turkey Vultures

I took these pictures at the same time as the Pelicans.  As I was concentrating on the Pelicans I was a few birds jumping around and flapping there wings.  So I moved my focus over to them and discovered there was an Osprey on the beach eating a fish.  As I looked closer I discovered there were also two Turkey Vultures trying to steal the Osprey's lunch.  If was fun to watch these birds go round and round.  Finally the Osprey got tired of the pest and took his lunch and flew away.  The Vultures hung around and fought over the last few scraps that were left.

Look close, at the next two pictures,
and you can see the fish in the Osprey's grasp.

American White Pelican - Part 1

We spent last weekend at a friends lake.  See My Other Blog for details about our fun. There are several types of birds that hang around the water including: pelicans, ducks, geese, eagles, osprey, and vultures just to name a few.  Over the next couple days I am going to feature the American White Pelican.

The lake is north of Fort Collins, Colorado a couple miles off I25.

North is up and Fort Collins is South.

Magpie Babies

These pictures are of the Magpie's that had a nest in my backyard.  They had 3 babies.  One of them fell out of the nest way to early and momma and daddy spend a lot of time feeding and protecting him.  They chased off squirrels, numerous times, other birds, a fox (click here for more about the fox), my dog and even tried to scare off my cat that never goes outside.

First baby we saw.  This one came out of the nest several weeks to early.

Second baby we saw.  She was more mature but not flying yet.

Momma keeping a eye out for danger

Daddy yelling at my cat that was inside the house.  He would come right
up to the window and scream and peck on the window. The cat just laid
there and watched.  Almost like she was laughing at the bird.

Sky Watch

Visit Tom the Sky Watch Host

This weeks Sky Watch is from a couple weeks ago at the Broadmoor in Colorado Springs.  This is looking south from the club house over looking the East Coarses 18th green.  I was lucky enough to get to play the golf coarse where the 2008 US Senior Open
will be held in August.  For more pictures, from the Broadmoor, see my other blog: Tommy V's Stuff

Nesting Dove

These are the Doves that are nesting in a tree in the backyard.  They have been sitting on their eggs for a couple weeks now.  It has been fun to watch them.  If their eggs hatch this will be the 3rd set of baby birds hatched, in the backyard, this year.  The magpies have come and gone, and the Mountain Chickadees have hatched and momma and daddy are busy feeding them.

Summer Deer

The deer have come back this week.  I hope they hang around for a while.
It would be fun to watch their antlers grow.  There were 2 bucks and 2 does
in this group.

Hawk Making a Turn

These pictures are of the same Hawk form last week.  This time he is soaring alone.
I captured him making a beautiful, elegant left hand turn.  I could have sat and watched him for hours.

Check back tomorrow for more of the hawk.
